Recap of “Who’s in the Box?” PLL Episode 4x14

The Pretty Little Liars are back!  The winter premiere starts with Hanna, Aria, Spencer and Emily discussing Alison’s return.  They know that someone tried to kill Ali, buried her, and Grunwald pulled her out.  None of the girls are particularly happy to find out Alison is alive, but they decide to focus on making Rosewood safe so that Alison can return and they can get some answers out of her. Emily brings up the possibility that Alison is “A” and has been playing with all of them.  Other issues brought up?  Shauna sold Jenna’s car to Mona.  CeCe is still running from cops.  They aren’t sure if “board shorts” is even a real person.

Spencer thinks Ali may have reached out to Jason and that they should find him.  Hanna wants to figure out whose dead body is in Alison’s crypt.  It was important to someone that the girls believe Alison is dead.  Hmm.  Does that mean the police were in on it?  Wilden did make a false police statement about Toby’s mother.  Maybe he could have done something to make it seem like the police had Alison’s body.  Or maybe Garrett had something to do with it?

Emily asks Jessica DiLaurentis where Jason is.  Apparently he needed time alone.  He's been driving across country and visiting friends in Montana.  Ms. DiLaurentis can get in touch with Jason if it’s an emergency, but Emily says it’s not.

Meanwhile, Hanna continues her internet search for missing girls.  Hanna’s mom is having trouble getting a job, since everyone thinks that she had something to do with Wilden’s death.  Hanna’s dad and Isabel want Hanna to go with them to Australia, but Hanna doesn’t want to go.

Mona comes up to Hanna at school and offers to give her a ride in Jenna’s Mustang, but Hanna’s not interested.  Mona doesn’t understand why Hanna is shutting her out, especially since she confessed to killing Wilden in order to help Hanna.  Hanna doesn’t believe that Mona confessed to help her.  Mona always seems to have a hidden agenda, doesn’t she?

Hanna really takes charge in this episode.  She shows Spencer and Emily a picture of Sara Harvey, a missing blond girl that disappeared around the same time as Ali did, not far from Rosewood.  She thinks it's Sara's body that the police found in Ali's backyard.  She wants to get in touch with Sara’s friends.  Suddenly, the tv comes on, showing a black and white video.  It’s interrupted with a message from A, daring them to find Ali.

After class, Ezra apologizes to Aria for being selfish.  He tried to make all pieces of his life fit with Malcolm because he didn’t want to lose Aria.  After Aria graduates, he wants to try to be the guy that she thinks he is.

Spencer tries to find out where Jason is from her dad.  After all, he is Jason’s dad, too.  He agrees to find out where Jason is if Spencer promises to stay away from Ms. DiLaurentis.  Is he scared of her?

Hanna sets up a meeting with Sara’s friends.  Emily doesn’t want to go.  She’s upset that Alison never told them she was alive.  Hanna says that they have no way of knowing if Alison was scared and alone or laughing at them and completely fine.

Caleb surprises Hanna when he shows up at the coffee house.  He says he’s missed her and things have been complicated in Ravenswood.

Toby has been trying to get Radley to admit that his mom didn’t kill herself.
Radley is owned by a big health company, Declodyne.  Spencer and Toby threaten to hurt Declodyne by writing about the cover-up and Wilden’s altered police report on the internet.

Emily and Hanna meet with two of Sara’s friends.  Sara was eerily similar to Alison.  She had everything and made her friends feel special when she picked them.  One of Sara’s friends, Avery, didn’t show up.  She thinks Sara is still alive.  Avery saw Sara the day after Labor Day.  Hanna realizes that the dates don’t work with her theory, since Avery saw Sara after the cement was poured in Alison’s backyard.  Back at home, Ms. DiLaurentis offers Hanna’s mom a job at her real estate office, after she dreams that Alison told her to.  Something tells me this is trouble, especially since Spencer’s dad thinks they need to stay away from Ms. DiLaurentis.

Mona tells Ezra that she’s envious of how he supports Aria, Spencer, and Emily.  She’d like a mentor, too.  Mona thinks that Ezra knows things.  His reading list is revealing, books about secret identities and masks.  Mona thinks she is entitled to revenge after everything that’s happened to her, but Ezra points out that she’s done things to others as well.  Ezra says that fear is a motivator.  Mona has figured out how to dump all that fear which makes her special, but also vulnerable.  Without fear, she underestimates people and how far she can push people before they push back.  (Go Ezra!)  Mona seems rattled and leaves.

Spencer and Toby’s threats to Declodyne work.  Radley agrees to admit Toby’s mom’s death wasn’t a suicide.  Spencer’s dad thinks that they could do a lot of damage and shut Radley down.  He wants to close Radley for Spencer.

Ezra takes Aria to his friend’s cabin.  He looks after the place when his friend is out of town.  He wishes he could go back in time and avoid making mistakes with their relationship.  He knows Aria is with Jake, though.  Aria feels like things are all inside out and she doesn’t know what is real.  Ezra gives her the key to the cabin.  It can be their secret.  They kiss.  Later, Ezra stares at the latch on the floor that leads to the basement.

Emily is closing up at work when Sara’s friend, Claire, shows up.  Claire says Avery has been on medication and is getting worse the longer Sara is gone.  Claire admits that Sara wasn’t a nice person.  She wishes that Sara was dead so she can get on with her life.  She even wished Sara was dead before she went missing.

Hanna and Caleb have a fight when Caleb says he has to go back to Ravenswood.  Miranda needs him.  Hanna feels stupid for pushing Caleb toward Miranda.  Caleb says it’s not like that, but he won’t explain what happened.  Caleb leaves and Hanna’s mom is left comforting her as she cries.  Later, Hanna catches up with Caleb before he leaves.  She didn’t want to leave things that way.  They say goodbye.  Caleb cries as he drives away.

Emily tells Paige that she thought it was gift when Ali let her kiss her.  Now she realizes that it didn’t mean anything to her.  She doesn’t think Ali knew how to love anyone.  Ali broke Emily’s heart. Paige hates Ali for being so cruel.  Emily thinks that she is starting to say goodbye to Alison.

Back at Alison’s crypt, Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily still don’t know whose body is in there.  Hanna takes out Ali’s diary, the one she took from the lair in Ravenswood.  She had it the whole time, but didn’t show it to her friends because she didn’t want them to see what Alison wrote about all of them.

In the closing shot, a figure dressed in all black opens the basement door in the cabin that Ezra took Aria to.

As much as I love Ezra and Aria together, having a secret relationship is only going to backfire, especially since she's still with Jake.  I’m still holding out hope that Ezra is not “A” and is just trying to help protect the girls.  And what did Ali write in her diary about her friends?  What does Spencer’s dad know about Jessica DiLaurentis?  Still not sure whose side Mona is on.  Keep hoping for a genuine Mona and Hanna friendship moment, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon.  Can’t wait to get some more answers in next Tuesday's episode, "Love ShAck, Baby".
