Lucy Hale on Losing her Southern Accent

Lucy Hale, Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, grew up in Tennessee. After moving to Hollywood, Lucy Hale worked hard to lose her Southern accent. While on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Lucy Hale explained how she lost her accent.

Lucy Hale was recently a guest on The Late Late Show with James Corden, along with actor Glenn Howerton (Jack Griffin on NBC's sitcom A.P. Bio). The subject of accents came up because actor Glenn Howerton grew up in London. He bounced between two accents while he was a child. James Corden's son also switches off between a British accent and an American accent.

Lucy Hale knows all about losing accents. Lucy was raised in Tennessee and it's 110 percent on purpose that she no longer has a Southern accent. She actually took an accent reduction classes to lose her Tennessee drawl when she moved to Los Angeles.

In the accent reduction class, Lucy Hale was shown a diagram of a tongue and was told how to place her tongue. She was told that Southern speaking is a lazier way of speaking.

For months she was told not to talk to her mom. Lucy had to consciously think about what she was saying and enunciate everything.

It makes Lucy Hale a bit sad now, since she misses her accent.
