PLL Recap of 6x11 “Of Late I Think of Rosewood”: Charlotte is Murdered

“Of Late I Think of Rosewood” episode 6x11 of Pretty Little Liars brings the Liars reluctantly back to Rosewood.  The Liars were happily living five “A”-free years and have seemingly moved on.  They have new jobs and are in new relationships.  However, they get dragged back to Rosewood when Alison petitions the court to get Charlotte ("A") released.  Alison once again begs her friends to lie for her.  The Liars don’t have long to hang out with each other before Charlotte ends up dead and they are dragged back into a world of murder and secrets.

Alison DiLaurentis is now an English teacher at Rosewood High.  Dr. Rollins stops by to tell her that the judge set a date for Charlotte/CeCe’s hearing.  They’ve been working together to get Charlotte released.  Alison is sure her friends will help get Charlotte released, despite Dr. Rollins’s doubts.  Alison writes letters to her friends and asks them for help.

Alison’s letter reaches the other Liars, who are scattered in different areas.  Spencer Hastings is in Washington, D.C., Aria Montgomery is in the publishing business in Boston, Hanna Marin is off traveling for her fashion job, and Emily Fields is a bartender in California.

Alison writes the same letter to all four girls.  She reminds her friends of how close they are and how they understand each other better than anyone else.  She knows the Liars will be back in Rosewood to speak to the court about Charlotte's release.  Alison asks for five minutes to explain why Charlotte should be free.

Emily is the first of the Liars to arrive at The Brew.  She's clearly been through a lot during the time jump.  She takes a bunch of pills before her friends show up.  After taking tons of selfies, they all sit down and catch up.  Hanna talks about her job working for a fashion designer.  Hanna is engaged a new guy, Jordan.  Aria jokes that Hanna’s engagement ring looked bigger when she posted it.

Emily tells her friends that it took her an extra year to finish college.  It also seems like she’s lying to her friends about her job.  She quickly changes to subject and asks about Aria’s boyfriend Liam.  Spencer dated an ambassador’s son for a while, but she’s too busy to date now.

The Liars all go home to catch up with their parents.  Emily’s mom is happy that Emily is back in town.  Emily asks about Greg, a guy her mom has been seeing.  Emily’s mom is taking a break from Greg.

Radley Sanitarium is now a hotel that Hanna’s mom runs.  Hanna’s mom has been trying to get Hanna to visit, but she never came.  When Alison calls, though, Hanna comes running.  Hanna’s mom doesn’t want Hanna to feel obligated to help Alison.  Hanna doesn’t owe Charlotte anything after the years of torture.

Aria goes home to see her dad.  Aria gives her dad a present (James Tiptree’s short stories) from her boyfriend Liam.

Aria’s dad is surprised that Aria is meeting her friends at The Brew, since Ezra is living in the apartment above it.  Aria’s dad heard Ezra got sick during his Habitat for Humanity trip to South America and was sent back to Rosewood.  Nicole, Emily’s Australian friend who recruited Ezra to join Habitat for Humanity, got kidnapped in South America.  Fifteen people are either dead or went missing.  Aria says that she wrote Ezra a letter when she heard what happened, but she never heard back from him.

Veronica Hastings, Spencer’s mom, is running for State Senate.  Spencer’s dad has been helping raise money for her campaign.  Spencer’s involvement in politics (she’s a lobbyist now) is what inspired her mom to run.

Aria goes to The Brew and sees Ezra for the first time in five years.  Aria works in publishing now.  Aria’s boss gave Ezra an advance on his second book, but Ezra never got around to writing it after what happened in South America.  Ezra, clearly still tormented, doesn’t understand how Nicole could have been dragged away by revolutionaries.  No one can find her now.  Going to South America to help build homes shouldn’t have cost Nicole her life.

Spencer goes to see Toby, who is building a house by himself.  Spencer suspects he’s building the house for a girl, but he doesn’t give any details.  Spencer is surprised that Toby and Caleb are still in touch.  They even went fishing together last summer.  Toby tells Spencer that the brotherhood of ex-boyfriends have to stick together.

The Liars haven’t returned to Rosewood together before, so Toby is surprised that they all came running when Ali flashed the Bat-Signal.  Spencer insists that it isn’t like that.  Toby and Spencer make plans to have dinner together.

The Liars meet with Alison at Rosewood High.  Alison insists that Charlotte is better now.  Charlotte even stayed at her house for a weekend last Christmas.  It was a supervised visit, though.

The judge needs to hear from the Liars before deciding if Charlotte should be released.  Alison seems surprised that her friends don’t seem sympathetic towards Charlotte.  Alison expects her friends to tell the court that Charlotte isn’t a threat.  Aria reminds Alison that they all have scars that prove otherwise.

Hanna can’t believe that Alison is asking for Charlotte to have a Get Out Of Jail free card.  Charlotte is lucky that she is in a hospital instead of a jail after what she did to the Liars.  The Liars are lucky that they are even alive.

And what is going on with Sara Harvey, who was revealed to be both Red Coat and the Black Widow?  The Liars did something to her that night at Radley and they are worried she’ll tell the judge.  Alison explains that Sara Harvey isn’t allowed to testify because of how her criminal charges were resolved.

Alison and Dr. Rollins appear to be the only ones who actually want Charlotte to be released.  Mona plans to tell the judge about the dollhouse and being torture.  Alison’s brother, Jason DiLaurentis, doesn’t think Charlotte should be released.

Alison doesn’t care if the Liars forgive Charlotte.  She just wants Charlotte to be free.  The Liars are in town to tell the judge how they feel, but Alison wants them to lie for her.  When the Liars don’t agree to help, Alison walks away.

The Liars come out to support Spencer’s mom as she gives her campaign speech.  They wonder what to do about Alison’s request.  The court has all the police reports that describe how Charlotte tortured them.  Spencer figures they can just tell the judge they aren’t afraid of Charlotte and then get the hell out of Rosewood.

Mona shows up and asks Spencer if she still has nightmares.  Mona admits that, despite seeing three shrinks and having lots of prescriptions, she still has nightmares.  Spencer seems happy to see Mona, but she doesn’t answer her question.

Toby and Emily catch up on Emily’s front porch.  Toby explains why he and Spencer broke up.  They went out of sync.  He loves living in Rosewood, but it had too many bad memories for Spencer.  He’s still a police officer, but he was passed over for a promotion.

Emily admits that college wasn’t what she thought it would be.  She had a hard time with it.  After her dad died, she didn’t see a point to anything anymore.

At the hearing, Alison testifies first.  Charlotte was her family’s missing part.  She wants to bring her sister home.

Spencer, Hanna and Emily all decide to lie for Alison.  They all say that Charlotte is no longer a threat and they aren’t afraid of her anymore.

Aria is also about to lie for Alison and begins to read a prepared statement.  Ezra comes in late and Aria has a flashback to Charlotte torturing her in the dollhouse.  Deciding to tell the truth, Aria says that she wouldn’t feel safe if Charlotte left the hospital.

Aria explains how damaged she is from Charlotte's torture.  She tells the court that the train she was riding stopped in the tunnel.  The power went out and Aria was back in every dark box and tight space that “A” put her in.  Aria couldn’t even breathe.  Aria heard a girl crying and was glad that she wasn’t the only one scared out of her mind.  The lights came back on and everyone was staring at her.  Aria realized she was the one crying on the train.  Aria tells the court that she doesn’t want Charlotte released ever.

Surprisingly, Mona also has a change of heart after hearing Hanna, Spencer and Emily say that they forgive Charlotte.  She can’t hate Charlotte because she knows what it is like to be in Radley Sanitarium.  Mona believes Radley twisted Charlotte out of shape.  Mona tells the court to let Charlotte come home.

Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hanna all go to Radley for drinks.  They get a text from Alison telling them that the judge decided to release Charlotte.  Spencer never thought Charlotte would actually be released.  She thought they could all just lie for Alison and it wouldn’t matter.  Turns out their lies helped free “A”.

Aria apologies to her friends for not lying with them, but her friends aren't mad at her.  Instead, they apologize to her.  Aria was the only honest one of them.  Spencer tells Aria “You are small, but you are mighty.  You put us all to shame.”

The Liars get drunk and talk about how much they miss each other. They plan to party together anywhere but Rosewood. Paris, Rome, Madrid and Rio top their list of places to go. Alison and Charlotte can stay in their big house in Rosewood and bake cookies.

Hanna is surprised the bar in the hotel doesn’t have special drinks, considering the hotel used to be a sanitarium.  The Liars think Electroshock Margaritas, Manic Depressive Mai Tia and Bipolar Martinis would all be good names for drinks at the hotel.

The Liars head back to Hanna’s suite to crash after having too much to drink.  The next morning, they get a panicked call from Alison.  Alison and Charlotte spent all night talking, but Charlotte was gone when Alison woke up.  Alison asks the girls to come over.

Meanwhile, Toby and Lorenzo find Charlotte’s dead body beneath the bell tower.  (Coincidentally, the same bell tower where Ian Thomas died).  Charlotte died between 3 AM and first light.  They initially suspect Charlotte jumped to her death.

Emily comforts Alison, who is in bed crying.  Dr. Rollins asks Emily to stay with Alison until she falls asleep.  Dr. Rollins is distraught.  He never would have let Charlotte leave the hospital if he thought she might kill herself.

Hanna and Caleb have an awkward reunion.  Hanna is surprised when Caleb shows up at her hotel room.  Spencer told Caleb what happened with Charlotte and Caleb wanted to check up on Hanna.  Looks like Caleb and Spencer have gotten close during the five year time jump.  Caleb was with Spencer when she got Alison’s letter.  Caleb is even thinking of working with Spencer.

Hanna looks a bit annoyed to find out Caleb is living in Spencer’s barn.  Maybe because Spencer should have mentioned it to Hanna earlier?  Hanna assures Caleb that they are still friends.  After Caleb leaves, Hanna looks at her engagement ring.

Spencer is waiting for Caleb in the lobby of the Radley hotel.  They both leave the hotel together.

The ending of “Of Late I Think of Rosewood” is similar to how the story started in the pilot of PLL.  (When the Liars attended Alison’s funeral and were confronted by Detective Wilden).

The Liars all show up at Charlotte funeral to support Alison.  Mona, Ezra and Caleb are also there.  The Liars are horrified when Sara Harvey shows up and takes a seat behind Alison and Dr. Rollins.  Sara Harvey lifts her black veil and stares down the Liars, who all look away quickly.

The Liars are about to leave the funeral when Officer Lorenzo stops them.  He wants the Liars to all stay in Rosewood.  Charlotte’s autopsy report showed that Charlotte was dead when she was thrown from the bell tower.  The police are ruling her death a homicide.

Someone in a black car watches the Liars before driving away.

What did you think of Pretty Little Liars “Of Late I Think of Rosewood” episode 6x11?  Who do you think killed Charlotte?  Do you like seeing the Liars five years older?
