Recap of PLL 6x02 “Songs of Innocence”

The Liars are traumatized after the dollhouse torture in “Songs of Innocence” PLL 6x02.   The Liars have been rescued from the dollhouse, but now they have to deal with what they went through.  All the girls deal with their terrifying ordeal in different ways.  Aria jumps on the ‘Andrew is A’ bandwagon, Hanna does massive remodeling of her room, Emily goes to a shooting range and Spencer wrestles with her pill addiction.  Andrew Campbell is arrested, but the Liars still shouldn’t feel safe.  The Liars can’t even lean on each other for support because they feel guilty over what they did to each other during Charles’s sick games.

The Liars all gather in Spencer’s hospital room to discuss the Andrew-is-“A” theory (Mona is in a different room with Sara Harvey).  Hanna heard that the police found suspicious plans and journals in Andrew’s house.  The girls wonder if Charles is really Andrew.  Aria is absolutely sure that Andrew Campbell is the one who kidnapped them.

Spencer doesn’t want any of them to tell the police about the name Charles DiLaurentis.  The cops will figure everything out when they find Andrew.

The girls don’t have to wait long for that to happen because the Rosewood police have already tracked down Andrew.  Andrew tries to get Toby to listen to him, but all Toby wants to do is beat him up.  Another police officer stops Toby and tells him to make the arrest.

Alison’s dad is furious that she went off to save the Liars without the police.  He clearly has no idea how many times the Liars have covered for Alison, since he doesn’t think she had any obligation to help them.

Alison’s dad assures her that she is safe, but Alison doesn’t know the answer to Emily’s question about Charles DiLaurentis.  Alison asks her dad who Charles DiLaurentis is, which makes her dad act weird.  He denies that there ever was a Charles DiLaurentis in their family, but he doesn’t look like he’s telling the truth.

Emily checks in on Sara Harvey.  Sara is all alone, but she talked to her mom on the phone.  Sara tells Emily that she ran away and ended up in a parking lot near Rosewood.  Someone hit her on the head and she woke up down in the dollhouse.  Now she knows what happens to bad little girls.

Emily asks Sara if she saw anything or heard a voice while she was locked down there, but Sara refuses to talk anymore.

Toby visits Spencer in the hospital to give her the good news that they arrested Andrew Campbell.  They tracked him in Tyler State Park and flushed him out.  Toby is sure Andrew is guilty.  They found the prison van at his uncle’s farm, they traced all of “A”’s gear back to him and they know Andrew hated Mona and Alison.  The one thing they don’t have is a confession.

Spencer is just glad that she’s getting some pills at the hospital.  She was finally able to get some sleep, something she hasn’t done in a really long time.  Toby kisses Spencer and tells her that they never gave up on her.

Hanna gets home to find the torture isn’t over.  Being in her bedroom only reminds her of being in the replica room that Charles created.  Hanna starts peeling the wallpaper off her bedroom walls.  Caleb is concerned when Hanna doesn’t care what kind of wallpaper she wants instead.  He knows Hanna would normally obsess over finding the perfect wallpaper.  Upset, Hanna says that she just wants it all gone.  Caleb, the perfect boyfriend, agrees to help her do anything that she wants.

Aria comes home from the hospital with tons of antibiotics, supplements and anti-anxiety meds.  Aria’s mom is going to stay with Aria for a couple of nights.  Aria’s dad is busy dealing with the police.  Her parents don’t want her to talk to the police until she is ready, but Aria wants to talk to them right away.  She wants to do everything she can to make sure Andrew doesn’t get out of jail.  Aria won’t let Andrew hurt her or anyone else ever again.

Emily breaks into her dad’s safe and takes her dad’s gun to a shooting range.

Spencer’s mom heard that Mona won’t be charged for faking her death and framing Alison.  Andrew Campbell will be blamed for everything.

Spencer panics when she realizes that her prescribed anti-anxiety medication isn’t in her bag.  She needs those pills to sleep.  It’s not a hospital mistake though.  Spencer’s mom asked them not to give her the pills, given Spencer’s history of pill addiction.

Spencer is furious with her mom, but her mom doesn’t back down.  She’ll do anything she can to help Spencer, but she won’t let her take the pills.

Later that night, Spencer can’t sleep.  In a flashback to the dollhouse, we find out what happened to the Liars when they were tortured in their rooms.  The Liars were forced to torture each other.  We see Spencer push a button and then we hear a Liar screaming in pain.

The next morning, Alison comes by the Hastings house to check on Spencer.  She tells Spencer that her dad said there isn’t a Charles DiLaurentis.  Spencer bluntly calls Alison’s dad a liar.  Alison’s dad didn’t ask who brought up the name Charles and he didn’t think about it.  He just immediately shut her down.

Although Spencer doesn’t believe Alison’s dad, she has no interest in going to the police and telling them about Charles DiLaurentis.  She’d rather let the cops figure out if Charles really is Andrew.  Spencer doesn’t think it’s a far-fetched idea.  After all, Spencer and Alison are both related to Jason.

Spencer thanks Alison for getting them out of the dollhouse.  Alison knows her friends would have done the same thing to rescue her.

Aria and Ezra catch up at The Brew.  Aria, again, thanks Ezra for rescuing her from “A”.  She assures him that she will be okay, but Ezra is concerned about her.  He suggests that she write about what happened to her as a way of dealing with it.  Aria gets upset when he suggests that.  She doesn’t want to own it, memorialize it, or think about it being in a diary somewhere in her room.  That part of her life is over.  She wants a big wall between ‘before’ and ‘after’.

Alison runs into Toby and his new partner, Lorenzo Calderon.  Despite Alison’s help in rescuing the girls from Charles/"A", Toby doesn’t seem happy to see her.  Understandable, since Alison did get Toby thrown in juvie when she blamed him for the firecracker she set off that ended up blinding Jenna.

Hanna’s mom comes home to find Hanna and Caleb dragging furniture out of her room.  Hanna says her mom can sell or give all the furniture away.  Confused, her mom says it is a little late for a yard sale.  She suggests that Hanna go to bed and they can talk about Hanna’s remodeling plans in the morning.  That’s going to be a problem, since Hanna’s bed is already in the hallway.

Frustrated, Hanna says all her furniture is ruined.  Hanna’s mom doesn’t understand Hanna’s sudden hatred of everything in her bedroom.  Hanna’s mom and Caleb exchanged concerned looks, which only pisses Hanna off more.

Emily’s mom is furious when she finds out Emily stole her dad’s gun and went to gun range.  She doesn’t want to fight with Emily, but makes it clear that Emily isn’t allowed to go shooting by herself.  She wants Emily to talk to her, but Emily isn’t ready for that.

Emily’s mom suggests that Emily call Paige.  Emily already did.  Paige wanted to come back, but Emily told her not to.  Paige did the right thing when she left Rosewood.  Emily doesn’t want to drag Paige back into this.  She deserves to be happy.

Hanna sits on the floor of her bedroom, which is now completely stripped down and empty.  Hanna’s mom suggests that Hanna go shopping for new things with her friends.  Hanna doesn’t want to see her friends because of what happened in the dollhouse.  Hanna’s mom asks her what happened to her in that room in the dollhouse.

We find out more about the twisted games Charles used to force the Liars to hurt each other.  He would play games like Truth or Dare.  Who do you love more, me or her?  Who deserves water today?  They had to decide or they would lose their turn.

Hanna’s mom tells her that she can have anything she wants.

Aria is determined to get Andrew locked up, so she and her mom go down to the police station.  The police have a mountain of circumstantial evidence and a paper trail connecting Andrew to the silo where the girls were held.  Aria’s mom brings up a good point.  How could a high school boy afford all the equipment that “A” used?

The police want to know if Aria actually saw Andrew at the dollhouse.  Aria says he was always masked.  She’s positive Andrew is “A”, though.  He hated Mona and he was always around when something happened.  She thinks Andrew was pretending to help her, so that he could watch her.

The police are exploring motives and looking at the timeline of things, but they don’t have a direct testimony.  They need someone to have seen Andrew Campbell at the scene of the crime.  Otherwise, he may walk.

Aria proves she really is a pretty little liar by saying that she saw Andrew in the dollhouse without his mask on.  Doesn’t she know by now that lies never work out for her and her friends?  Both Aria’s mom and the police can see through this obvious lie.

Toby and Spencer have a picnic.  Toby has started doubting that Andrew kidnapped the girls.  Why would Andrew hold on to the prison van instead of ditching it?  Why would he hide it so close and why hide it somewhere he could be linked to?  Spencer doesn’t want to answer those questions, so she just says that “A” is for arrogance.

Toby wanted to beat up Andrew for what he did to Spencer, but he still doesn’t know exactly what happened in the dollhouse.  He doesn’t know why Spencer won’t talk to him about it.

Emily goes back to the shooting range.  While shooting, she has a flashback.  We see Emily playing Charles’s twisted game.  There are switches and photos of her friends in front of her.  He tells her to choose one or all will suffer.  Emily chooses one friend to hurt.  We can hear a Liar screaming after she chooses.

Lorenzo spots Alison in church.  He promises not to tell anyone that she was there.  He knows that she doesn’t want people to know.

Emily’s mom goes ballistic when she finds out Emily went back to the shooting range.  She saw how angry Emily was and you never bring anger to the gun range.

Emily says the time in the dollhouse felt a lot longer than three weeks.  Sara Harvey was down in the dollhouse for years and you could see that in her eyes.  Emily’s mom tries to reassure her that the person who hurt her is behind bars.

Emily admits that she was afraid.  She thought going to the gun range would take away some of that fear, but it just made it worse.  It made her the same as what she was afraid of.

Spencer comes over and Aria tells her that she screwed up on a global scale.  She knew how stupid it was to lie about seeing Andrew down there, but it just came out.  Spencer knows that this isn’t good for the case against Andrew, but she understands the impulse.

Things are still awkward between the girls.  Aria and Spencer both thank each other for coming over and calling each other.  Aria apologizes to Spencer, most likely for the torture Charles made them inflict on each other, but Spencer asks her what she is sorry for.  When Aria leaves her bedroom to talk to her mom, Spencer swipes some of Aria’s anti-anxiety medication.

Caleb sets Hanna up with an air mattress until she gets a new bed.  Caleb tells Hanna that she is the bravest person he has ever met.  Hanna likes that, but it’s not true.  Caleb tries to convince Hanna that she and her friends will get through all this.  Hanna doesn’t see how that is possible.  She can’t even look them in the eye.

Caleb reminds Hanna that people do mend.  She taught him that.  “Sometimes you end up stronger at the broken places”, he tells her.  Hanna falls asleep in Caleb’s arms.  Hanna’s mom comes in, but she doesn’t mind Caleb staying there longer.  Both Hanna’s mom and Caleb are united in their love and concern for Hanna.

Alison sees Lorenzo at The Brew.  She apologizes for being rude at church.  She was just embarrassed to be seen there.  She knows people will assume she was there for show or that she went crazy in jail.  Lorenzo doesn’t seem to judge her and he offers her one of his little hamburgers.

Meanwhile, Aria’s mom asks Aria about the lie she told at the police station.  She tells Aria that everyone wants to see the person who hurt the girls get caught and punished.  Aria, once again, adamantly insists that Andrew is guilty.  Aria’s mom tells Aria that she is smart, but to remember that she is also wise.

Emily goes outside and finds Sara Harvey lurking in the shadows outside Emily’s house.  Sara claims to have seen Emily’s address at the hospital.  She ran away from home again.  Emily’s mom joins them and listens to Sara explain that her mom didn’t want her back.  Everyone paid attention to her mom while she was gone.  Her return spoiled all that for her mom.  Sara wishes she’d stayed in the dollhouse.  Emily’s mom tells Sara that she can stay at their house for the night and leaves to set up the couch.

Emily tells Sara that the police caught the guy who tortured them.  They will get justice now.  Sara saw a photo of Andrew Campbell on the news.  She asks Emily if she is sure that he is the right guy.

Spencer stares at a pill that she took from Aria’s room, unsure if she should take it.  Her mom comes in and Spencer quickly hides the pill.  Spencer can’t sleep, so her mom offers to stay up and watch movies with her until they both fall asleep.

The Liars all talk to each other on the phone.  We can’t hear what they are saying, but they are most likely talking about Sara Harvey and her doubt that Andrew Campbell is “A”.

Andrew Campbell, now is custody, is interrogated at the police department.

Ali looks through a family photo album.  It looks like some photos are missing.

Do you think the Rosewood Police are right about Andrew Campbell?  Wonder what he was doing at Tyler State Park. Do you think the Liars can trust Sara Harvey?
